Research conference
On March 27th, Grade 11 and Grade 12 students took part in a research conference, during which Grade 12 students presented their research papers in English, covering a diverse range of topics. This conference took place in the concert hall of Rezekne Polish State Gymnasium from 8 a.m to 1 p.m. Together there were 19 people presenting their research papers, the Grade 11 as listeners and Zigmārs Litavnieks as the host. The event was organised to explore various literary pieces, highlighting their themes and key issues.
As a participant, organiser and presenter of the conference, I have expanded my understanding of the issues that plague different literary works, mainly Oscar Wilde’s “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, however, there were also works, such as John Milton’s “Paradise Lost”, J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” series and George Orwell’s “Animal Farm”. The conference was structured with each speaker having 10 minutes, 7 minutes to present and 3 minutes to answer questions. During this conference, we explored many themes: role of influence, stereotypes, colours, obsessions, corruption and many more. These topics are a rich source of inspiration for understanding how historical works remain relevant in modern times.
This event was useful because it offered a platform for interdisciplinary research that connects literature, philosophy and psychology. It encouraged critical thinking and provided understanding into themes that remain relevant today. Many topics like free will, influence that society has on you, stereotypes, and obsession encouraged listeners to contemplate their own ideology, actions, and values. It showcased our creativity and research skills in various topics.
